This effort will be supported by the Smithsonian and its network, including mentors and competitive seed funding for projects. Goals: 1. Transform classroom learning and student ideas into actual, impactful community projects that students lead 2. Provide opportunities for students to practice academic and career readiness skills, such as negotiation, consensus building and decision making, budgeting, public speaking, persuasive communication, and project management. Club members will investigate the environmental issues facing their school and community. In collaboration with teacher sponsors, Smithsonian staff and partners will introduce students to local conservation leaders and resources, and provide opportunities for students to meet and network with their peers across the state to discuss issues of common concern. Smithsonian will sponsor field trips to conservation sites, and provide opportunities for students to practice leadership skills, through public speaking, project management, and competitive internships. |

Incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles, experiential learning, and hands-on outdoor field experiences, the Envirothon fosters student learning in the areas of AQUATIC ECOLOGY, FORESTRY, SOILS, and LAND USE, WILDLIFE, and CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.Students are challenged to develop critical thinking skills to create inventive solutions to the complex local and global environmental and natural resource issues facing our world today. With the Envirothon, students are empowered to educate others, take action in their local communities, pursue higher academic study in environmental disciplines, and to work toward careers in the environment, natural resources and conservation. |
